Laika the Space Dog: The One-Way Sputnik 2 Mission

Laika became the first animal to orbit Earth in 1957. The Soviet spacecraft had no way to bring her home.

On 3 November 1957, the Soviet Union sent a stray dog named Laika into orbit aboard Sputnik 2. She became the first animal to orbit Earth. There was no plan to bring her home. Laika survived the launch but died after the spacecraft became dangerously hot during the first part of the mission.

Was Laika the first animal in space?

No. Animals had travelled into space before Laika, including fruit flies and other Soviet dogs on short flights. Laika was the first animal to orbit Earth. Sputnik 2 carried her all the way around the planet on 3 November 1957. This made her mission a major step beyond the flights that came before it.

Animals had already been used to test rockets before 1957. The United States had sent fruit flies and monkeys on high-altitude flights. The Soviet Union had also launched dogs on rockets and tried to bring them back by parachute. These flights reached space but did not travel around Earth. Some animals survived. Others died when rockets or recovery systems failed.

Laika crossed a new line. Sputnik 2 entered orbit and kept travelling around Earth. This meant a living animal had survived the force of launch and reached orbital flight. Laika became known around the world almost at once. Her mission came only one month after Sputnik 1 became the first man-made satellite to orbit Earth. It also gave Soviet scientists their first data from a living animal in orbit.

Why did the Soviet Union send Laika into space?

The Soviet Union wanted to learn if a living animal could survive a rocket launch and stay alive in orbit. Laika carried sensors that measured her body during the flight. The mission also had a political goal. Soviet leaders wanted another major space success soon after the launch of Sputnik 1.

Sputnik 1 had shocked the world when it reached orbit on 4 October 1957. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev wanted another space success in time for the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution in November. Engineers therefore had only a short time to prepare Sputnik 2. The new spacecraft would be much heavier and would carry something Sputnik 1 did not have: a living passenger.

Laika was a small stray dog from Moscow. Soviet teams had already used dogs for rocket tests, so they knew how to train them. Laika was kept in small spaces and taught to wear the equipment needed for flight. Sensors were fitted to her body so scientists could watch her heart, breathing and movement. The aim was to see how a living body reacted to launch and orbit.

Was Laika meant to return to Earth?

No. Sputnik 2 had no system that could bring Laika safely back to Earth. The mission was built as a one-way flight. The Soviet team knew before launch that Laika would die. Even if the spacecraft had worked as planned, she would not have returned alive from orbit.

The mission was made very quickly. Engineers did not have enough time to build a spacecraft that could leave orbit, survive the heat of re-entry and land safely. NASA's history of the mission says no recovery plan was made for Laika. The spacecraft carried air, food and equipment to keep her alive for a limited time, but there was no way for her to come home.

This was not hidden from the people working on the mission. Laika's trainers knew the flight would be fatal. Vladimir Yazdovsky, one of the doctors who worked with the dogs, later said he took Laika home to play with his children before the launch. He knew she had only a short time left. Three days before launch, Laika was placed inside the spacecraft.

How did Laika die in space?

Laika died after Sputnik 2 became far too hot. A problem with the spacecraft stopped its heat-control system from working as planned. Her body showed clear signs of stress during launch. Later evidence shows that the temperature inside the cabin rose sharply. Laika most likely died within the first hours of the mission.

The launch put Laika under heavy stress. Data sent back to Earth showed that her heart rate and breathing rose sharply as the rocket climbed. She reached orbit alive, but the spacecraft soon developed a serious heat problem. Part of the rocket did not separate as planned, and the system meant to control the temperature could not keep the cabin cool.

The cabin grew hotter as Sputnik 2 moved around Earth. A later Soviet report said the temperature reached about 43 degrees Celsius during the early orbits. For many years, the public did not know this. In 2002, Russian scientist Dmitry Malashenkov helped reveal that overheating had killed Laika far sooner than the Soviet public had been told. The exact hour of her death is still not fully clear.

Did the Soviet Union tell the truth about Laika's death?

No. Soviet reports gave the public a false picture of what happened to Laika. People were told that she had survived in orbit for several days. Some reports said she later died when her oxygen ran out or was put to sleep. In fact, the spacecraft overheated and Laika died much earlier.

News reports around the world followed Laika after the launch. Soviet updates made it seem that she was still alive days later. Different stories then appeared about how she had died. One version said her oxygen had run out. Another said she had been given poisoned food so that she would die without pain. The real details of the failed heat system were not made public.

The story changed slowly as Soviet records became easier to study. In 2002, new details from Russia's Institute of Biological Problems showed that Laika's cabin had overheated early in the flight. Later-released Soviet papers added more detail about the heat and the data sent from her sensors. The famous story of Laika surviving for days in orbit was not supported by the mission records.

Did Laika's mission help human spaceflight?

Yes. Data from Laika showed that a living animal could survive a rocket launch and remain alive after reaching orbit. Her flight also showed problems that future spacecraft had to solve. Three years later, Soviet dogs Belka and Strelka went into orbit and returned alive. Yuri Gagarin followed in 1961.

Laika's sensors gave scientists information about how her body reacted to launch and weightlessness. Her heart and breathing changed under the stress of the flight, but she reached orbit alive. That showed that a living body could survive the first part of an orbital mission. The failure of the heat-control system also showed how dangerous a spacecraft could become when its life-support systems failed.

The Soviet dog programme continued after Laika. In August 1960, Belka and Strelka became the first animals to orbit Earth and return alive. Their safe flight was an important step toward sending a person into orbit. On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit Earth. Laika had flown more than three years before him, but she never had the chance to return.
