What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites function correctly, improve performance and provide information to site operators. We also use a small amount of local browser storage the same way — it isn't technically a cookie, but it works the same way and we cover it below too.

Cookies We Use

Below is everything we set, grouped by whether it depends on your Accept/Decline choice further down this page.

Running the site (always on) — these don't involve Meta and aren't affected by your cookie choice:

  • cookie_consent — remembers your Accept/Decline choice itself, so we don't ask again every visit.
  • la_email — set once you've signed up or ordered, so we know not to show you the same signup prompt again.
  • la_ref — records a referral code if you arrived via a friend's link.
  • la_archive_headline — remembers which version of The Archive page you were shown, for our own testing of what works.
  • A couple of small cookies that remember whether you've already seen or closed our newsletter popup.
  • Your shopping cart — kept in your browser's local storage, not a cookie, so it survives a page refresh.

Our own campaign measurement (always on) — also not shared with Meta by itself:

  • la_attrib — if you arrive via a link with tracking parameters (for example, from one of our ads or emails), we note which campaign and creative brought you here, and the page you landed on. This is our own record for working out which of our campaigns actually lead to a sale. Kept for 90 days.

If you clicked through from a Meta ad specifically, that same cookie may briefly hold a reference Meta itself would use to recognise that click. We only pass that reference on to Meta if you've accepted advertising cookies below — otherwise it stays on our side, is never sent anywhere, and is removed the moment you click Decline.

Meta advertising — only if you accept, below — with your permission, we use two connected tools from Meta Platforms, Inc. so we can tell whether our Facebook and Instagram ads are working:

  • Meta Pixel — code that runs in your browser and tells Meta when you view a page or take an action, such as joining our list. It sets two cookies of its own, _fbp and _fbc, so Meta can recognise your browser again later.
  • Meta Conversions API — the same kind of event, sent directly from our own server rather than your browser. We use it as a backup for the Pixel, since browsers increasingly block that kind of script. It includes a scrambled (technically: cryptographically hashed) version of your email address, plus your IP address and browser type, so Meta can still match the event to the right ad — your actual email address is never sent to Meta in readable form, but this is not anonymous data: it is designed specifically to be matched back to you.

Neither of these runs — in your browser or from our server — unless you have clicked Accept. If you click Decline, or simply haven't answered yet, both stay off.

Data collected this way is processed by Meta under their own privacy policy, and cookies they set are generally kept for up to 180 days.

We do not use any other third-party advertising cookies.

How To Change Your Choice

We remember the choice you made the first time you visited — both in your browser and, so our server can respect it too, in a matching cookie — for up to 180 days. You can review or change it at any time using in the footer of every page, or right here, without needing to clear your browser or hunt for a settings menu.

How to Opt Out

Beyond the Cookie Preferences link above, you can also control cookies more broadly:

  • Browser settings — most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies through their settings menu. Consult your browser's help documentation for instructions.
  • Facebook ad preferences — you can manage how Meta uses your data for advertising by visiting your Facebook Ad Preferences settings.
  • Your Online Choices — visit youronlinechoices.com to opt out of behavioural advertising from participating companies.

Disabling cookies may affect the functionality of certain features on our site.
