In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Laika, a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, into orbit aboard Sputnik 2 — with no plan to bring her home. She became the first living creature to orbit Earth, sent alone to win a point in a rivalry she never understood, in a capsule built for one and returned to no one.
